Reference List vs Bibliography

Reference List

Bibliography

Required for each module - not included in your word count Optional
Only include sources that you have discussed in the main text (essay).  As a general rule, if you refer to a source in an essay, you should explain why it is significant and how it relates to the learning outcome.  This would normally be more than one sentence in your own words. Why do the extra work?

Unless a bibliography is specified in the suggested tasks, this is just extra work that does not get any marks.
Every source mentioned in your essay should also be in the reference list.

Shrink Pictures

One way to shrink your pictures is to use the online tool at http://www.shrinkpictures.com/

1. Choose picture to shrink (browse to your photo)
2. Select 600 pixels
3. Ignore step 3
4. Choose good
5. Click on resize
6. Download the picture. It will have a strange file name, ending in .jpg

Replace the pictures in your document with the resized pictures. This should considerable reduce the file size of your document.

First Sentence

A great opening sentence can set the tone for a reader - here are some from Level 3 draft assignments:

As children we are expected to go to school and learn, from there it’s A Levels and a degree course, although for some of us this comes a little later in life, our jobs however are a place for earning,(Knapper, 2001).

As mentioned in a post in FirstClass, I’m already going through a similar process in school with a program called ExpertTrail.

I have grown in confidence in my own mind of my skills as a learner since leaving school many years ago.

(First line of dialogue in a script) E: which explains why you made the career move into educational IT, and almost brings us up to the present day.

My action Inquiry is focused on improving the work and practice of the Attendance Officer position, a role I currently undertake within my school.

This course of study has certainly helped to shape my understanding and approach to learning.

What is a lifelong learner?

My research project, an action inquiry into developing the assessment of student needs in using assistive technology, has enabled me to research best practice in this field in order to establish a new support service for the students at our college.

The Learning Skills Audit, figure 1 appendix A,demonstrates where I feel I am at this point in my learning.

The first thing I notice about the learning audit was that my opinions of my skill levels were already well defined.

Who are these new breed of graduates soon to hit the job market?

I feel that my greatest strength seems to be in the area of interpersonal skills.

Looking back over my adult life I can point to several examples which support the view that I am a lifelong learner.

If we were to say to someone ‘How do you show employability?’ many would answer that ability to do my job.

Yeaxlee first discussed Lifelong Learning back in 1929 when he described it as a continuing aspect of everyday life.

And from a professional:

Robson: The purpose of this book is to give assistance, ideas and confidence to those who, for good and honourable reasons, wish to carry out some kind of investigation involving people in "real life" situations; to draw attention to some of the issues and complexities involved; and to generate a degree of informed enthusiasm for particularly challenging and important area of work.

Blogs, Journals and a new academic year

Some students (and staff) have chosen to use blogs as learning (and sometimes personal) journals - places to keep notes that may be useful for drafting assignments. Many of these are published on the Home page in the Plone site. http://researchers.ultraversity.net/ Using a blog (an online diary) is optional, but can be used as evidence of trying a new online tool for the IOCT module, as well as being a place to keep notes.
